Reekado Banks Opens Up About Departure from Mavin Records

Nigerian Afrobeats star, Reekado Banks has shared his candid thoughts on leaving Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, describing the decision as premature.

In a recent interview, Banks revealed that his exit from the label in 2018 was driven by his youthful determination to forge his own path.

Reekado Banks explained that he signed a three-year contract with Mavin Records, which he allowed to ride for another two years, totaling five years. Despite the amicable nature of his departure, Banks acknowledged that he quickly realized the hastiness of his decision.

“You know, I thought I could do it now. And I just embarked on the journey… And as soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realized how premature it was,” he said.

In a previous interview, Banks reflected on the lessons he learned from his departure, including the importance of accountability and self-reliance. He noted that staying longer under Don Jazzy’s guidance might have made him feel entitled and less willing to own up to failures. “If I stayed much longer, it would be like, I’m under the biggest label, so whatever little thing I do should count. But now I know what I am, I know exactly what I am doing,” he said.

Reekado Banks also shared a humorous yet impactful moment with Don Jazzy, saying, “He just said, ‘I’m not going to beat you.’ Nobody go beat me.” This statement highlights the positive relationship between the two, with Banks expressing gratitude for Don Jazzy’s mentorship and support during his time at Mavin Records.

Since his departure, Reekado Banks has experienced an on-and-off presence in the music scene while exploring other business ventures.

He eventually established his own label in 2024, stating, “Now, I’m in partnership with God”. This new chapter in his career reflects his growth and determination to succeed on his own terms.
