FG Orders Weekly TV Coverage of Lagos–Calabar Highway Works

The Federal Government has ordered weekly television coverage of the ongoing Lagos -Calabar Coastal Highway project to enhance transparency and keep Nigerians updated on its progress.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, gave the directive during an inspection tour of the project and associated bridges in Lagos. He explained that at least two television stations would be taken to the construction site each week to showcase sections of the road under development.

According to Umahi, the highway has attracted intense public interest and scrutiny, with some Nigerians raising concerns about alleged irregularities. He said the live coverage would help the public understand the true scope of work, as well as the challenges faced during construction.

“People need to know what is happening here. It takes courage for the contractor, the ministry, and Mr President who approved this project. When the road is completed, Nigerians may not understand the effort that went into it, so we must showcase it,” he said.

Highlighting the complexity of the project, Umahi revealed that parts of the highway required the removal of poor soil ranging between five and 20 metres deep before being refilled with stone lumps and sand to ensure durability.

He commended Hitech Construction Company, the contractor handling the project, for demonstrating exceptional capacity, commitment, and quality in execution.

The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, is expected to boost economic activities, open up coastal communities, and enhance connectivity across states once completed.
