Uganda Stuns South Africa to Reach First CHAN Quarter-Finals

Uganda pulled off a historic comeback on Monday, rallying from two goals down to secure a 3-3 draw with South Africa and book a maiden place in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals.

The dramatic Group C clash at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala saw the Cranes qualify for the last eight for the first time, while South Africa crashed out despite leading 3-1 with seven minutes to play.

Jude Ssemugabi had given Uganda the lead in the first half, but South Africa hit back after the break with quickfire goals from Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Thabiso Kutumela. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo added a third in the 83rd minute to seemingly seal victory.

Captain Allen Okello sparked hope when he converted a penalty in the 88th minute after Ivan Ahimbisibwe was brought down in the box.

Another spot kick deep into stoppage time, awarded via VAR for handball, was blasted home by Rogers Torach to complete the comeback.

The result ensured Uganda topped Group C with seven points, edging out Algeria and South Africa, who both finished on six points. Algeria advanced on goal difference, while South Africa’s exit capped a disappointing campaign.

Uganda’s success also means all three co-hosts, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, have reached the CHAN quarter-finals, setting up an unprecedented show of regional strength.
