Omosede Igbinedion Clinches Ovia Federal Constituency Seat in Edo By-election

Omosede Igbinedion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Ovia Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Edo State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared her the winner early Sunday morning.
According to INEC Returning Officer Clement Ighodaro, Igbinedion secured 77,053 votes, defeating her closest rival, Johnny Aikpitanyi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 3,838 votes. Dr. Sandra Asemota of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) placed third with 925 votes.
The Ovia Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the election of Dennis Idahosa as Edo State’s deputy governor in November 2024. Idahosa had previously represented the constituency in the House of Representatives.
In December 2024, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, declared the seat vacant, paving the way for the by-election.
Igbinedion, daughter of the prominent Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 under the PDP. She contested the seat in 2019 and 2023 but was defeated by Idahosa. In 2024, she switched allegiance to the APC and was adopted as the party’s consensus candidate for the by-election.
In her victory speech, Igbinedion expressed gratitude to her supporters and pledged to deliver impactful and effective representation at the National Assembly. She emphasized her commitment to addressing the needs of her constituents and contributing positively to national development.
This victory marks Igbinedion’s return to the House of Representatives, where she aims to continue her service to the people of Ovia Federal Constituency.
