NNPP Wins Bagwai/Shanono By-Election in Kano State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ali Lawal Alhassan of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) winner of the Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency by-election in Kano State.
According to the official results announced on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Alhassan secured a decisive victory with 16,198 votes, defeating his closest rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 5,347 votes.
The wide margin underscores the NNPP’s strong grassroots presence in Kano, a state considered one of its strongholds since the 2023 general elections.
The victory also reinforces the party’s influence in the Kano State House of Assembly, where it has continued to assert dominance despite stiff competition from the APC.
The Bagwai/Shanono seat became vacant following the death of the former lawmaker representing the constituency, prompting INEC to conduct the by-election.
Political observers note that this outcome could further consolidate the NNPP’s political relevance in Kano ahead of future elections, particularly as the party seeks to expand its influence beyond the North-West.
