Kano NNPP Rejects Tsanyawa/Ghari By-Election Result

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has rejected the result of the Tsanyawa/Ghari State Constituency by-election conducted on Saturday in Kano State, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of bias and irregularities.

The Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Garba Ya’u Gwarmai, winner with 31,472 votes, while the NNPP candidate, Yusuf Ali Maigado, scored 27,931 votes.

The election followed a Court of Appeal ruling which ordered a fresh poll in 10 polling units of the constituency.

Reacting on Sunday, the NNPP state chairman, Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, rejected the declaration, alleging that INEC announced the result at its state headquarters instead of the constituency collation centre. He also accused the commission of cancelling the affected 10 polling units despite results already signed by presiding officers.

Dungurawa described the process as a violation of the Electoral Act and vowed that the NNPP would challenge the outcome in court, insisting that the exercise had been manipulated to favour the APC.

While faulting the Tsanyawa/Ghari result, the NNPP praised INEC for the conduct of the Shanono/Bagwai by-election, where its candidate, Ali Alhassan, was declared winner.
The APC has since welcomed its victory in Tsanyawa/Ghari, while the NNPP’s rejection of the outcome sets the stage for another post-election legal battle in Kano State.
