Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA Wins Anambra South Senatorial By-Election with Landslide Victory

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has recorded a sweeping victory in Anambra State as its candidate, Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu, clinched the Anambra South Senatorial seat in the by-election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Announcing the results on Sunday, August 17, the Returning Officer declared Nwachukwu winner after he polled a commanding 90,408 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 19,812 votes.

Other parties trailed behind, with Donald Amangbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) securing 2,889 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) managed 205 votes.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had just 68 votes, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) finished with 6,538 votes.
The by-election was held to fill the vacant seat left by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.

Ubah, elected on the Young Progressives Party (YPP) platform in 2023 before defecting to the APC, represented Anambra South until his passing. His death created one of the most keenly contested senatorial by-elections in the South-East.

Chief Nwachukwu’s victory is historic as he becomes the first politician from Nnewi South Local Government Area to represent Anambra South in the Senate since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

A former President-General of Ukpor, Nwachukwu is widely respected for his community leadership and grassroots mobilization. His emergence as senator is seen as both a personal triumph and a major win for APGA, which continues to hold strong appeal in Anambra politics.

With this victory, APGA has regained a strong foothold in the National Assembly. The party now holds two senatorial seats in Anambra—joining Labour Party’s Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and APGA’s ally, Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), in the Senate. APGA also won the Onitsha North 1 House of Assembly by-election held on the same day, further proving its resilience and dominance in the state’s political landscape.
Political observers have described the by-election result as a pointer to the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.

The landslide victory for APGA suggests that the party still enjoys massive grassroots support despite growing competition from the APC and Labour Party. Analysts argue that the outcome strengthens APGA’s bargaining power ahead of the governorship race and signals that the electorate may continue to favor the party that has historically governed Anambra for much of the Fourth Republic.

Chief Nwachukwu will soon be sworn in as the Senator representing Anambra South in the 10th National Assembly. His legislative focus, according to political associates, is expected to center on community development, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. For APGA, the by-election win is more than just a legislative gain—it is a morale booster that could shape the outcome of the high-stakes governorship poll later this year.
