APC Wins Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency in Kano Supplementary Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency supplementary election held in Kano State, reaffirming its political stronghold in the region.

Announcing the results in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, declared Garba Ya’u Gwarmai of the APC as the duly elected candidate. Gwarmai polled a total of 31,472 votes, defeating his closest contender, Yusuf Ali Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who garnered 27,931 votes.

The supplementary poll was conducted to conclude the electoral process in the constituency following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of the March 2025 election as inconclusive.

The rerun was held across several polling units where irregularities and disruptions had marred the initial exercise.

With this win, the APC reclaims the Ghari/Tsanyawa seat, boosting its representation in the Kano State House of Assembly.

The result also marks a significant political development in a state where competition between the APC and NNPP has remained intense.

Reacting to the outcome, supporters of the APC described the victory as a testament to the party’s grassroots presence and voter confidence.

The campaign team of Garba Ya’u Gwarmai expressed appreciation to constituents for their renewed mandate and pledged effective legislative representation.

Meanwhile, some opposition figures have expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election. Though no official petition had been filed at press time, political observers noted isolated reports of voter intimidation and logistical delays during the supplementary vote.

In a related development, the NNPP claimed victory in the Bagwai/Shanono constituency—another rerun held on the same day—highlighting the competitive landscape of Kano politics as parties continue to jostle for dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Ghari/Tsanyawa election was closely monitored by electoral observers, civil society organizations, and security agencies to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and the peaceful conduct of the process.

INEC has yet to issue a comprehensive report on the overall rerun exercise in Kano, but initial assessments suggest that the supplementary polls were largely peaceful, albeit with isolated incidents.

As Kano continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political dynamics, the outcome of local elections such as this remains a critical indicator of shifting alliances and voter sentiment in the state.
