Reps to Grill Member Over Bill Payment Allegation

The House of Representatives says it will summon Ibrahim Auyo, lawmaker for Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency, to provide proof for his claim that legislators pay to sponsor bills, motions, and petitions.

In a Friday statement, House spokesperson Akin Rotimi described the viral allegation as unsubstantiated and damaging to public trust in the legislature.

He stressed that parliamentary procedures for introducing bills and motions are governed by constitutional and ethical rules, leaving no room for bribery.

Rotimi noted that the 10th Assembly, now at its midterm, has recorded over 2,200 bills, 237 passed, and more than 1,100 motions in two years, with tangible impacts across education, health, security, and the economy.

The statement added that Auyo will be asked to defend his remarks when the House reconvenes in September, failing which the matter would go before the Ethics and Privileges Committee.

The House urged members to address grievances through due process, maintain mutual respect, and safeguard the institution’s dignity.
