The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has detained an alleged leader of an armed robbery gang, Inima Sunday Akpan, hailing from Abak Itiat Ikwuk in the Ini Local Government Area. A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, and disseminated to journalists in Uyo over the weekend, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at a hideaway in Ibiaku village, near Uyo City Polytechnic, where he sought refuge from law enforcement after multiple robbery involvements.

John indicated that the suspect was implicated in numerous robbery incidents across the Ikot Otor, Ikot Uboh, and Ikot Osurua communities within the Ikot Ekpene council area before going into hiding.

The statement partially reads:

“On Thursday, August 14, 2025, at approximately 7:00 PM, the Command’s operatives successfully detained a suspected notorious cultist and armed robbery suspect who has been terrorizing the residents of Ikot Ekpene and adjacent areas.

“Relying on credible intelligence, the Command’s operatives apprehended the suspect, one Inima Sunday Akpan, a male from Abak Itiat Ikwuk Village in Ini Local Government Area, who had been in hiding in Ibiaku Village near Uyo City Polytechnic.

“Akpan had a history of involvement in multiple armed robbery cases, including recent incidents in Ikot Otor, Ikot Uboh, and Ikot Osurua, where a lawyer (name withheld) was shot, and several others were injured. Additional members of his gang have already been captured.”

John stated that stolen items were retrieved from the suspect’s hideaway, including a Daylong motorcycle, originally painted red but subsequently repainted black.

She added that other seized items included a 32-inch television, an LG home theatre/sound system, an amplifier, and a mattress.

“A search of Akpan’s hideout at the time of his arrest yielded several items suspected to be stolen, including: one new Daylong motorcycle (originally red, repainted black), one 32-inch Itec television, one LG home theatre/sound system, one amplifier, and one foam.
