Cross River Governor Pledges Support for Nigerian Ports Authority

The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has committed to working closely with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to unlock the economic potential of the Calabar Port and accelerate the development of the proposed Bakassi Deep Seaport.
This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the NPA Governing Board, led by its Chairman, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye.
Otu described the partnership between the state and the NPA as a “natural marriage” that can deliver benefits not only to Cross River but also to the entire country.
He emphasized the need to build on this collaboration to boost the state’s and nation’s economy.
The governor highlighted the importance of increasing maritime capacity to enhance national trade volumes and GDP.
He acknowledged the challenges facing the Calabar Port, including dredging and low vessel traffic, but expressed confidence that with renewed commitment, the facility can regain its commercial viability.
Otu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the Bakassi Deep Seaport project, which is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership. He noted that the project has been anchored around agriculture and other export potentials, and expressed optimism that it will be a commercial success.
The NPA Board Chairman outlined priority areas for collaboration with the state, including tackling community disruptions, rehabilitating federal roads, promoting exports, and strengthening security. He emphasized the potential of the Calabar Port to serve as a catalyst for trade, economic growth, and industrial transformation.
With the visit, both parties have set the stage for a stronger collaboration that can drive economic growth and development in Cross River State and beyond. The governor’s commitment to working with the NPA is expected to unlock new opportunities and boost the state’s economy.
