CNG Scheme Attracts $980m as Portland Gas Opens New FCT Station

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has recorded a remarkable $980 million in investments in just 18 months, signalling what stakeholders describe as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sectors.
PCNGI Chief Executive Officer, Michael Oluwagbemi, disclosed the figure on Wednesday at the launch of the Portland Gas Ltd/NASENI CNG Daughter Station Auto Conversion and Training Centre, located along the Kubwa Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Oluwagbemi said the surge in investment has been driven by major industry players, including BUA Group and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), which have collectively committed over ₦720 billion to acquiring CNG-powered trucks and establishing 100 water stations nationwide.
“This is the fastest-growing sector in the country today. We have moved from just 4,000 CNG-powered vehicles to about 100,000 in only 18 months, and the numbers keep rising,” he stated.
The new Portland Gas/NASENI facility is expected to boost the adoption of CNG by offering vehicle conversion services and hands-on training, further supporting the Federal Government’s push for cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable transportation alternatives.
Industry analysts say the rapid expansion of CNG use could help reduce Nigeria’s dependence on petrol and cut transportation costs, especially in the wake of rising fuel prices.
