Peter Obi Campaigns for ADC Candidate Ahead of Onitsha North By-Election

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Mrs. Justina Azuka, ahead of the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Obi, who was spotted wearing an ADC-branded cap during a campaign rally in Onitsha, said his support for Mrs. Azuka was driven by compassion and solidarity rather than party politics.

He stressed that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, clarifying that his appearance at ADC events should not be mistaken for a defection.

Mrs. Azuka, widow of the late lawmaker who represented the constituency until his abduction and murder in December 2024, is contesting under the ADC platform to complete her husband’s tenure. Obi described her as a capable and committed candidate who deserves the people’s mandate.

The by-election has attracted significant political attention, with observers noting the unusual alliance between Obi and the ADC.

Political analysts believe the outcome could signal shifting dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Campaign activities in Onitsha North have intensified in recent days, with ADC holding rallies and community engagements to mobilise voters.

The seat became vacant following the tragic loss of the previous legislator, and residents are expected to head to the polls this weekend to elect a new representative.
