ADC Alleges Tambuwal’s Arrest by EFCC Politically Motivated

The arrest of former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked fresh allegations that the anti-graft agency is being used as a political weapon by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking earlier today, warned that the EFCC “now operates like a department of the APC, deployed to fight government critics and opposition figures, thereby achieving what the government cannot achieve through public debate.”
Tambuwal, a prominent opposition figure and member of the newly formed Coalition for a Better Nigeria, was reportedly taken into custody over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor.
However, his supporters insist the case is politically motivated, pointing to his recent alignment with the coalition as the real reason for his arrest.
“This is nothing but a political attack,” one aide to the senator said. “He has nothing to hide and will be cleared of all charges. This is intimidation, plain and simple.”
The EFCC has yet to issue a detailed statement on the charges, but critics argue that the agency’s recent high-profile arrests have disproportionately targeted opposition politicians, fuelling claims of partisanship.
Analysts say Tambuwal’s case could become another flashpoint in Nigeria’s increasingly tense political climate, with opposition parties accusing the APC-led government of shrinking democratic space through the instrumentalisation of state institutions.
