EFCC Apprehends Senator Tambuwal Over Alleged ₦189bn Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday detained Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State, over allegations of irregular cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.

Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto State between 2015 and 2023 and currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District, was said to have arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 11:30 a.m., where he was immediately subjected to interrogation by investigators.

Sources within the anti-graft agency alleged that the withdrawals in question contravened provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Details of the specific transactions, the timeline of the withdrawals, and the beneficiaries have not yet been disclosed.

As of press time, the EFCC had not issued an official statement on the matter, and it remains unclear whether formal charges will be filed against the former governor.

Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, is the latest high-profile political figure to come under EFCC scrutiny in recent months as the agency intensifies its crackdown on alleged large-scale financial crimes.
