Conflicting Ambitions Threaten Political Coalition’s Survival

Amid growing speculation over the formation of a political “super coalition,” insiders warn that conflicting personal ambitions and timelines may derail the alliance before it even takes shape.
Observers note that while the public assumes the coalition’s members will unite behind a single goal, the reality is far more complex. Behind closed doors, age, political succession plans, and personal survival are shaping the calculations.
“There are people who feel that if they don’t run now, age-wise, it’s over for them,” one political analyst explained. “Waiting another four or eight years could end their political careers entirely.”
Others, however, are playing the long game, eyeing opportunities that could come only after an incumbent completes another term. But such patience is not universal, and accommodating different ambitions could push leadership opportunities 12 to 16 years into the future an unacceptable delay for some.
The situation is compounded by deep mistrust. Certain coalition members refuse to support rivals they fear could entrench themselves in power, effectively locking others out of the race for over a decade.
Analysts describe the process as a complex “mathematical game” involving age, interest, and political longevity far from the simple narrative presented to the public.
For ordinary Nigerians, the high-stakes maneuvering adds uncertainty to an already tense political climate. As one observer put it, “Some Nigerians are fearing for their lives, and they will never be part of it just by having certain people in the mix.”
With time running out before the next electoral cycle, the coalition faces mounting pressure to reconcile its differences or risk collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.
