ADC Governorship Candidates Back Leadership Transition, Urge Coalition Leaders to Follow Due Process

Governorship candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) across Nigeria’s 36 states have called on political leaders in the proposed opposition coalition to strictly comply with due process as they join the party.

In a statement released on Monday by their spokesperson, Terhemen Tilley-Gyado — the party’s 2023 governorship flagbearer in Benue State — the group addressed recent leadership changes within the ADC and the coalition’s next steps.

The statement opened with an acknowledgment of the voluntary resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, describing his tenure as impactful.

According to the candidates, the smooth transition of leadership to the Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala, who will now serve as acting National Chairman, is in line with the party’s constitution and will help maintain organisational stability.

“We unanimously acknowledge, appreciate and support the voluntary resignation of our amiable National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu. In line with the party’s constitution, we endorse the seamless transition of leadership to the Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala, who will henceforth oversee the Office of the National Chairman in an acting capacity.

This decision ensures stability and continuity in our party’s mission,” the statement read.

The candidates also welcomed the interest of several political heavyweights in working with the ADC but stressed that all alliances must be rooted in legality and transparency.

They specifically urged coalition figures — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami SAN, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi — to formally cut ties with their previous political parties and register at their ADC ward level in line with the Electoral Act.

“This entails: Formal resignation from their former political parties, and registration as bona fide members of the ADC at their respective ward levels in line with the Electoral Act,” the statement emphasized.

Highlighting the party’s commitment to progressive ideals, the candidates described the ADC as a “progressive, integrity-driven platform ready to champion Nigeria’s democratic renewal” and expressed optimism about coalition-building efforts.

“We are gratified that these respected leaders find our party a worthy vehicle for coalition-building and national transformation. We welcome all constructive partnerships anchored on transparency, legality, and shared vision,” they said.

Reaffirming its stance, the ADC said it remains committed to internal democracy, the rule of law, and the pursuit of good governance. It called on members, supporters, and potential allies to rally around these principles as the party positions itself for a stronger role in the country’s political landscape.
