Yakubu Gowon University Appoints New Acting Vice-Chancellor

Professor Matthew Adamu has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, formerly known as the University of Abuja.

 

His appointment, which takes effect from August 11, 2025, will last for three months. Adamu succeeds Professor Patricia Manko Lar, who served as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months.

 

Adamu is a renowned veterinary scholar with 27 years of experience as a registered veterinarian.

 

He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Maiduguri, as well as a PhD in Veterinary Surgery from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has developed a distinguished career in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision.

 

As Acting Vice-Chancellor, Adamu will work closely with the Governing Council, led by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to finalize the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.

 

The university community has expressed gratitude to Professor Lar for her dedicated service and visionary leadership during her tenure.

 

Adamu’s academic qualifications include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (1998) and a Master’s degree (2006) from the University of Maiduguri, and a PhD in Veterinary Surgery (2012) from the University of Pretoria.

 

He is a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria and specializes in Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology (Helminthology).
