US Police Officer Killed, Suspect Dead in Shooting Near CDC, Emory University

A police officer was killed and a suspected gunman fatally shot in a violent incident near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and Emory University in Atlanta on Friday evening.

The shooting, which occurred around 4:50 p.m., sent the university into lockdown and left parts of the CDC campus damaged by gunfire.

According to authorities, the incident began when an unidentified man opened fire outside the CDC’s Roybal Campus and near Emory University grounds. Bullets struck several CDC office windows, prompting the university to issue an emergency alert urging students and staff to “RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.”

A nearby daycare centre housing 92 children was also locked down. All the children were later reunited with their families unharmed.

Responding, officers from the DeKalb County Police Department engaged the shooter in the area. Officer David Rose, 33, was critically wounded in the exchange and later died at a hospital. Rose, described by colleagues as a dedicated public servant, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children.

The suspected shooter was later found dead on the second floor of a CVS pharmacy close to the scene. Investigators have not confirmed whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

At least four CDC buildings sustained bullet damage, though no CDC staff members were physically injured.

Four other individuals sought medical attention for stress-related symptoms after the incident.

CDC Director Susan Monarez expressed her condolences, calling the event “heartbreaking” and praising the swift actions of first responders. Local and federal agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, are now leading the investigation to determine the motive behind the attack.

Atlanta’s mayor and Georgia’s governor both commended law enforcement officers for their bravery and urged the public to support the families affected by the tragedy. For the CDC, Emory University, and the city at large, the incident has underscored the unpredictable dangers faced by officers and the importance of coordinated emergency responses in the face of active shooter threats.
