LASU Staff Reject Government Resumption Directive, Continues Strike

The staff unions of Lagos State University (LASU) have declined the state government’s proposal and are persisting with their strike.

The Lagos State Government has consented to disburse 12 months’ worth of the 23 months of arrears for a 25%/35% salary increment owed to LASU workers.

This agreement was formalized on Thursday, August 7, between the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

In a rapid response, LASU employees, during an emergency congress on Friday, August 8, 2025, dismissed the state’s offer and criticized the JAC leadership for endorsing the agreement without consulting the congress.

Despite this repudiation, LASU management has declared the recommencement of academic activities on Monday, August 11.

Additionally, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, issued a personal plea to the workers to embrace the state’s proposal.

JAC, through a letter addressed to Deputy Governor Dr. Hamzat, conveyed the congress’s resolution to decline the 12-month payment offer and to persist with the industrial action.

The letter, dated Friday, August 8, 2025, was endorsed by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, Secretary Dr. Sylvester Idowu, SSANU-LASU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal, Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi, NAAT-LASU Chairman Olujimi Adejo, Secretary Adewunmi Fadiora, NASU-LASU Chairman Obafemi Sanni, and Secretary Muhammed Kelani, all demanding full settlement of the 23-month arrears.

JAC informed the state government that the congress had reviewed and rejected the agreement as insufficient, insisting on full payment of the 23-month arrears under a suitable arrangement.

The congress proposed the payment be executed in five installments: four installments of five months each, followed by a final installment of three months, with the first payment commencing in August 2025.

The congress also resolved that the government and LASU management should prioritize settling the full 23-month arrears of the 25%/35% increment and present other unresolved issues to the governor for approval.

According to the signed agreement, only 12-month arrears would be disbursed, with the government covering nine months and LASU management three months.

Following the agreement, LASU management, via a circular, instructed staff to resume duties on Monday, August 11, asserting that the state government had addressed their demands.

In a message to colleagues in response to the congress’s decision, LASU VC Olatunji-Bello acknowledged that the staff’s concerns had been heard and, along with JAC leadership, they had acted in their best interest.

Olatunji-Bello remarked, “Today, the state government has made offers addressing our demands. While they may not fulfill every expectation, I urge acceptance as part of the negotiation process, allowing academic and administrative activities to resume this Monday, August 11, 2025, as directed by management.

“The longer we remain apart from our students and our work, the more profound the impact on our community, our youth, our reputation, and the progress we have collectively achieved.

“I implore you to remember that we are not adversaries but partners, united by a shared vision for a Lagos State University that honors its staff and serves its students with pride. If we have accomplished so much in less than four years of collaboration, I am confident we can achieve all our goals, but it will require patience, unity, and trust.

“Please trust me when I say: I am for you and will continue to work in your best interest. Let us return to our duty posts, not as a concession, but as a testament to our belief in each other and our collective strength.”
