Gbenga Daniel Kicks as Ogun Govt Moves to Demolish Ex-Governor’s House, Hotels

The political rift between former Ogun State Governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has deepened following fresh demolition threats against some of Daniel’s prime properties. On Friday, Daniel’s media office revealed that officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development served contravention notices, quit orders, and demolition warnings on three of his properties in Sagamu — his private residence, Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, and the hotel’s annex. Daniel’s camp has described the move as politically motivated, accusing the Abiodun administration of using a 2022 state urban planning law to target buildings that were legally constructed long before the legislation came into effect. They allege the government is applying the law retroactively as part of a coordinated attempt to destroy the senator’s personal and business interests. The latest confrontation has revived memories of the September 2023 demolition of DATKEM Plaza in Ijebu-Ode, a five-storey commercial building owned by Daniel’s wife, Olufunke. That demolition, carried out in the middle of the night, triggered public outrage and accusations of abuse of power. The state government at the time defended its action, citing multiple infractions, including deviations from approved building plans, over-density, and the owners’ alleged disregard for stop-work and demolition orders. Daniel’s family vehemently denied the allegations, insisting the demolition ignored valid court orders and was an act of political vendetta. Governor Abiodun, however, maintained that no one was above the law and vowed to enforce building regulations without exception. In his latest statement, Daniel claimed the current notices are part of the same pattern of harassment, stressing that the affected buildings were properly approved and have operated legally for years. His spokesperson described the government’s action as an abuse of state machinery to intimidate political opponents. The Ogun State Government has yet to issue a formal statement on the latest notices, but observers believe it is likely to argue that the enforcement of building regulations is in line with due process. Analysts warn that the dispute could escalate into another prolonged legal battle, with possible political consequences ahead of the next election cycle. For now, the fate of Senator Daniel’s properties in Sagamu remains uncertain, as tensions between two of Ogun State’s most prominent political figures continue to intensify.
