FIRS Celebrates Inaugural Research Day

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has celebrated its inaugural Research Day, an event of significant import aimed at integrating research-driven decision-making within Nigeria’s tax administration.

Spearheaded by the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, the occasion convened internal stakeholders, scholars, policymakers, and tax professionals to unveil a suite of knowledge products poised to enhance the nation’s tax system and economic governance.

During the launch, Dr. Adedeji characterized Research Day as “a bold affirmation that research is pivotal to tax administration,” emphasizing that “without research, we risk navigating in obscurity; with it, we illuminate the path forward.”

He underscored that Nigeria’s intricate economic landscape necessitates that policy reforms and technological advancements be grounded in credible data and rigorous analysis. “Every question we pose, every data point we scrutinize, and every policy we craft brings Nigeria closer to prosperity,” he asserted.

The FIRS leader also encouraged all departments to assimilate research findings into their planning and execution, while advocating for sustained collaboration with the academic and development community “to fortify the bridge between theory and practice.”

Among the initiatives unveiled were the Tax Revenue Statistical Bulletin, an authoritative compendium documenting tax data trends from 1970 to 2022, intended as an indispensable resource for economic analysis and policy formulation; and Volume 4 of the FIRS Journal of Tax Studies (FJTS), a peer-reviewed forum featuring contributions from FIRS personnel, academics, and industry experts.

To enhance accessibility, the FJTS digital platform (www.fjts.online) was also launched in collaboration with the Technology Department.

Halima M. Shehu, Director of the Research and Statistics Department, described the day as “a new beginning, not merely a commemoration.” She stated that the Research Policy was crafted to safeguard intellectual property, uphold methodological integrity, and cultivate a culture of inquiry throughout the Service. “Research and reliable data are not optional—they are imperative,” she remarked, urging increased interdepartmental cooperation.

In a weekend statement, Collins Omokaro, Special Adviser on Communications and Advocacy to the Executive Chairman, declared: “As FIRS forges a bold path forward, the 2025 Research Day stands as a defining moment—anchored in data, driven by inquiry, and dedicated to constructing a more intelligent, accountable, and innovative tax administration system for Nigeria.”
