NGF Names Umo Eno as 2025 Governor of the Year

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has honoured Governor Umo of Akwa Ibom State with the prestigious title of Governor of the Year 2025, in recognition of his exceptional achievements in governance, infrastructure development, and prudent financial management.

The announcement was made during a public event held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, themed “Measuring Progress, Deepening Impact.” The ceremony, which served as a performance review of the administration’s ARISE Agenda, was attended by government officials, policy experts, and civil society representatives. The award was presented on behalf of the NGF by Professor Abba Gambo, who represented the Forum’s Director-General, Abdullateef Shittu. In its assessment, the NGF noted that Akwa Ibom emerged top in a state-by-state comparative analysis on development outcomes, with Governor Eno’s administration distinguished for its commitment to inclusive growth, accountability, and people-centred policies. Gambo described Eno’s leadership as a model of transformational governance and applauded his ability to drive impactful projects without reliance on debt. Governor Eno, in his address, attributed the award to the collective efforts of his team and the people of Akwa Ibom. He highlighted several key achievements under the ARISE Agenda, including the construction of 205 ARISE Compassionate Homes for vulnerable citizens, the payment of over ₦78 billion in outstanding gratuities dating back to 2012, and the completion of critical infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, a new airport terminal, and expansion of Ibom Air’s fleet with CRJ 900 and Airbus aircraft. He also cited improvements in healthcare delivery, including the establishment of a new Mother & Child hospital in Oron, and education reforms supported by the launch of a Teachers’ Training Institute. Governor Eno emphasised that all these accomplishments were achieved without borrowing, a testament to the administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and transparency. The NGF award adds to a growing list of recognitions received by the governor. In July 2025, he was also honoured with the Outstanding Public Servant Award by the Queens of the Niger Delta Initiative for his contributions to human capital development and inclusive governance. Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to continue working in the interest of Akwa Ibom residents and to deepen the impact of his administration’s initiatives. He pledged to sustain partnerships with development stakeholders and remain focused on delivering tangible results.
