WAEC Appeals for Calm Over Portal Shutdown

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appealed for calm following the temporary shutdown of its result-checking portal, which has caused widespread frustration among candidates eager to access their 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The Council, in a statement released on Wednesday evening through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, explained that the portal was taken offline to address unexpected technical glitches that emerged shortly after the results were released.

WAEC assured candidates and stakeholders that the portal would be restored within 24 hours and emphasized that no results had been lost during the downtime.

The Council attributed the temporary shutdown to system upgrades aimed at improving performance and ensuring a more seamless result-checking experience.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Our technical team is working diligently to restore full access to the portal. We urge all candidates to remain calm and avoid panic,” the statement read.

The development has sparked fresh criticism from the public, especially in light of the disappointing performance recorded in the 2025 WASSCE. According to WAEC, only 38.32 percent of candidates obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics marking the lowest pass rate in over a decade.

Additionally, nearly 9.75 percent of results were withheld over suspected examination malpractice.

The situation has been further compounded by complaints of delayed papers and late-night examinations, notably in the English Language subject, which many believe contributed to the poor outcomes.

WAEC has advised the public to avoid unofficial platforms and refrain from engaging with individuals claiming to offer access to results.

The Council stressed that the official WAEC website remains the only legitimate channel for checking results.
