Register with Missions Abroad to Enable Emergency Support, FG Tells Nigerian Travellers
Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has urged Nigerians traveling overseas to prioritize registering with the Nigerian mission in their host nation to facilitate prompt assistance in emergencies.
He made this appeal while hosting a delegation from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), led by Chairman Idehai Frederick, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary referred to a recent incident where Nigerians were stranded in the Central African Republic, noting that some individuals, particularly on social media, sought to besmirch the Ministry’s reputation.
He stressed that the Ministry, along with Nigerian embassies and consulates, should be informed of travelers’ presence upon arrival, rather than when they encounter difficulties.
“I urge Nigerians to consider it an obligation to notify the Nigerian mission in the country they are visiting of their presence.
“This straightforward action can avert misunderstandings and ensure that Nigerians receive the necessary support during crises.
“There was a recent situation involving Nigerians stranded in the Central African Republic, where some attempted to disparage the Ministry,” he stated.
Dunoma underscored the significance of timely information dissemination and advocated for enhanced collaboration between the Ministry and DICAN to combat disinformation and misinformation.
He remarked that DICAN and the Ministry share the mutual objective of fostering a positive image of Nigeria.
“Providing essential information preemptively is often critical in effectively managing crises.
“We are tasked with the responsibility of elevating the nation’s image, hence the necessity of a fortified partnership between DICAN and the Ministry.
“This alliance is vital in ensuring that accurate information about Nigeria is communicated to the public, both domestically and internationally,” he remarked.
The Permanent Secretary expressed his gratitude to DICAN for organizing the recent world-class maiden Diplomatic, Security International Conference, which convened approximately seventy diplomats, security experts, academics, corporate entities, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to deliberate on enhancing global safety and security.
He noted that the conference, potentially qualifying for a Guinness World Record, has enriched dialogues on security and bolstered the impact of the 4Ds Policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in improving Nigeria’s international image amidst disinformation challenges.
“I commend DICAN for orchestrating this event, which has enriched security discussions and advanced Nigeria’s positive image, as well as safeguarded the welfare of our citizens abroad.
“Through collaboration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DICAN can foster a more precise understanding of Nigeria’s role in global affairs and address the challenges posed by disinformation and misinformation.
“While we face numerous challenges, it is our duty to ensure a positive narrative is projected, as patriotism is paramount.
“I believe we must convene, collaborate, and explore proactive measures.”
In presenting an award of excellence to the Permanent Secretary, DICAN Chairman Idehai Frederick solicited further support to enable the association to execute its agenda-setting initiatives.
“The Permanent Secretary has demonstrated a commitment to collaborating with DICAN, and we value his efforts in advancing Nigeria’s positive image,” Idehai stated.
