Nigeria to Host 2027 African School Games

Nigeria has been awarded the hosting rights for the second edition of the African School Games scheduled for 2027, beating strong contenders like Kenya and South Africa.

The announcement came shortly after the conclusion of the inaugural edition in Algeria on Tuesday, where Team Nigeria finished fourth with a total of 25 medals — six gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze — across 10 sports.

During the closing ceremony, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), along with hosts Algeria, symbolically handed over the host’s flag to Nigeria, marking the country’s official emergence as the next host nation.

Reacting to the development, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, expressed excitement over the win.

“This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent. Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence,” he said.

Olopade added that the last selection reflects Nigeria’s renewed global standing in sports.
“It is also a reflection of the Renewed Hope Mandate, Nigeria is fast returning to glory as the epicentre for sports excellence in Africa, while simultaneously growing our sports economy and enhancing our international image as a prime destination for global sporting events. In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent.”

The NSC credited Nigeria’s successful bid to its recent history of hosting acclaimed sports events, including the Confederation of African Athletics U-18/U-20 Championships.
Olopade also praised ANOCA for their confidence in Nigeria and assured that preparations will begin immediately to meet global standards.
