Son Heung-min for Transfer to Los Angeles FC in Record $26 Million Deal

South Korean football star, Son Heung-min is reportedly set to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC in a landmark $26 million transfer — the highest in MLS history — according to reports by ESPN and The Athletic.

Although LAFC has yet to officially unveil Son, anticipation among fans is already high. The club announced a press conference scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. local time (2100 GMT), widely expected to confirm the signing.

Son, who left English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur last weekend after a decade-long stint, is receiving a hero’s welcome in Los Angeles. On Tuesday night, about 40 eager fans gathered at Los Angeles International Airport, hoping to catch a glimpse of the forward following reports of his potential arrival.

However, the star had not yet landed after departing from South Korea earlier in the day.

One fan, 19-year-old Jun Kwon, told AFP, “Son is immensely important to me. I used to wake up at five or six in the morning to watch him play in England. He’s going to change things here. My father and I, who had no interest in MLS, are already won over.” Kwon sported a newly bought LAFC jersey emblazoned with Son’s name.

During his time at Spurs, Son scored 173 goals in 454 appearances, becoming one of the club’s most beloved players. He confirmed his departure from Tottenham during a farewell appearance in Seoul last weekend.

At LAFC, Son is expected to fill the void left by French striker Olivier Giroud, who recently transferred to Lille. He will also reunite with former Tottenham teammate and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, now a key figure at the Los Angeles-based club.
