Oyo Enforces Ban on Street Trading, Open Grazing

The Oyo State Government has launched a full-scale enforcement campaign against street trading, open grazing, and other violations of existing state laws, marking a significant step in restoring order and environmental sanity across the state.
Led by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), and Chairman of the Environmental Task Force, DCP Francis Ojomo (retd.), the enforcement team conducted operations on Tuesday in Ibadan, the state capital.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
According to the statement, the state government has resolved to fully prosecute violators of laws governing street trading, environmental sanitation, and anti-open grazing, following extensive public sensitisation campaigns.
At Bodija Market, one of Ibadan’s busiest commercial areas, the enforcement team dismantled illegal mini stalls, mobile counters, and roadside displays of goods as part of the crackdown.
The operation is said to be part of a broader initiative to restore order and improve urban aesthetics.
Justice Aderemi recalled that the government had commenced a wide-scale awareness campaign against street trading in January, beginning with a formal flag-off at Bodija Market.
She stressed that enforcement is the next phase following months of public engagement and warnings.
“We have been patient and deliberate in our approach. But now, enforcement is necessary to uphold the law and ensure public safety,” she said.
The joint task force emphasized that the government would not relent in maintaining discipline, environmental health, and adherence to existing regulations across Oyo State.
