Labour Party NEC Member Faults Gov. Alex Otti’s Role in NEC Meeting

A member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party, Dr. Avotu Johnson, has faulted the involvement of Abia State Governor Alex Otti in convening a recent NEC meeting, insisting that the governor lacks the constitutional authority to do so.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Dr. Johnson stated that “Alex Otti is not a statutory member of the NEC and by the constitution of the Labour Party, it is only a statutory member that can call for a NEC meeting.”
His comments come amid heightened internal tensions within the Labour Party, with various factions accusing one another of procedural violations and attempts to hijack the party structure.
Governor Otti, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, has increasingly taken a visible role in party affairs, especially at the national level.
However, critics argue that his role as a sitting governor does not automatically confer NEC membership unless explicitly provided by the party’s constitution.
Dr. Johnson called on party members to adhere strictly to the party’s guiding principles and constitutional provisions in order to preserve internal democracy and unity.
