FG Sites Model Veterinary Hospital in Gombe to Boost Animal Healthcare

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a model veterinary hospital in Gombe State as part of its drive to enhance livestock productivity and resilience nationwide.

The project, under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), was announced during a two-day technical visit to the state by the National Project Coordinator, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar.

Abubakar, who led the federal assessment team to inspect the proposed site, revealed that the initiative is part of a broader plan to improve access to quality animal healthcare in selected geopolitical zones across Nigeria.

According to him, the new hospital will play a key role in strengthening animal health systems, improving disease surveillance, and facilitating the certification of livestock products for both local consumption and international markets.

He noted, “This is a pilot project. It has never been done anywhere in the country. Gombe is the first, and we hope the state will serve as a model for others.”

The facility, which will be situated within Gombe’s newly established 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone, is part of the next phase of infrastructure rollout under the L-PRES programme.

Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the ongoing preparations at the site and commended the contractor’s readiness. He also reaffirmed the federal office’s commitment to supporting all livestock-related projects in the state to ensure the hospital’s successful delivery.

On his part, the Gombe State L-PRES Project Coordinator, Mr. Usman Abubakar, described the project as a major milestone for the state’s agricultural development.

He said, “We thank the national office for choosing Gombe to host this strategic facility,” while assuring that the state is fully prepared to support the project to completion.

The model veterinary hospital is expected to serve as a centre for diagnosis, treatment, research, and capacity building in livestock care, ultimately enhancing animal health and productivity across Gombe and the broader northern region.
