Church of Nigeria Severs Ties with Church in Wales Over Appointment of Lesbian Archbishop

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has announced that it is cutting ties with the Church in Wales due to the election of Bishop Cherry Vann, an openly lesbian cleric, as the Archbishop of Wales.

In a statement signed by Primate Henry Ndukuba on August 3, 2025, the Church expressed its disapproval of the appointment, citing a breach of biblical teachings on sexuality and leadership.

The Church of Nigeria has placed the Church in Wales in a “state of impaired communion,” meaning there will be no official partnership or fellowship between the two churches. This decision is in line with the Church of Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the authority of Scripture and the historic Christian faith.

The Church likened this move to its past decisions to withdraw from other Anglican provinces that have deviated from biblical teachings.

Primate Ndukuba emphasized the Church of Nigeria’s allegiance to orthodox Anglican provinces around the world and its determination to uphold biblical faith.

The Church has warned its members to avoid any form of cooperation or engagement with the Church in Wales or its representatives.

This development highlights the ongoing debate within the Anglican Communion over issues of sexuality and doctrine.
