Ondo Governor Gifts ₦30 Million, Residence to Falcons’ Demehin for WAFCON Triumph

Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin has been distinguished by Ondo Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, with a ₦30 million monetary award and a new residence in acknowledgment of her pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The proclamation was made during a civic reception on Monday, August 4, in Akure, where the State extolled its athletes who played integral roles in the Falcons’ victorious campaign in Morocco.

Aiyedatiwa lauded Demehin, a native of Ilaje Local Government Area, as a paragon of resolve, discipline, and sporting prowess.

He extolled her for bringing honor to both Ondo State and the nation through her performance on the continental stage.

“This is a moment of pride for us. Tosin Demehin has brought distinction to Ondo State on the continental stage. As a gesture of our gratitude, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a residence at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile,” the Governor declared.

In addition to Demehin, the Governor also bestowed ₦15 million each upon Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary — both also hailing from the state — for their indispensable support roles in the Super Falcons’ triumphant campaign.

Demehin, a former player of Sunshine Queens, featured prominently in Nigeria’s formidable defensive unit throughout the tournament, aiding the team in securing their record-extending 10th WAFCON title after overcoming Morocco 3-2 in the final.

“Receiving this honor from my home state is immensely significant to me. As a former Sunshine Queens player, I am cognizant of the immense potential in women’s football here. This support instills hope in many young girls with aspirations akin to mine,” she expressed.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also seized the occasion to reiterate his administration’s commitment to sports development and pledged to support Sunshine Stars FC in their endeavor to rejoin the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“We shall persist in investing in young talents, creating conducive environments, and furnishing the resources requisite for their success, particularly in sports,” he affirmed.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring the entire Super Falcons squad, remarking that such gestures elevate athletes’ morale and foster excellence.
