Tinubu Sends Delegation to Abidjan in Support of D’Tigress Ahead of AfroBasket Final
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-level presidential delegation to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to express the nation’s support for Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as they prepare to compete in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
This move underscores the president’s commitment to promoting sports and celebrating national excellence, particularly as D’Tigress aim for a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
In a statement released on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Tinubu praised the team for exemplifying the true Nigerian spirit through their discipline, unity, and outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
“I have dispatched a presidential delegation to Abidjan to stand with our superlative D’Tigress as they pursue a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title for Nigeria,” he wrote.
The delegation is led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko. It also includes the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabir Bello Ahmadu; the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye; the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; and the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite.
Also on the delegation are the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Sunday Dare; the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications and New Media Strategy, O’tega Ogra; the Senior Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Oyinade Nathan-Marsh; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the First Lady, Kukoyi Olubusola.
The AfroBasket final is scheduled to take place later today in Abidjan, where D’Tigress will face a formidable opponent in their bid to retain the continental title. A win would secure Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball in Africa and further etch the team’s name in the history books.
The presence of the presidential delegation is seen as a significant morale booster for the team and a signal of the administration’s continued support for Nigerian athletes representing the country on the global stage.
