Anambra Intensifies Crackdown on Fake Revenue Collectors, Jails Offenders Six Months

The Anambra State Government has ramped up its crackdown on illegal revenue collectors, arresting and prosecuting several suspects in ongoing operations aimed at sanitising the state’s revenue system.
In a statement on Sunday, the Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), Greg Ezeilo, said the joint operation was carried out in collaboration with the State Anti-Touting Agency, targeting hotspots notorious for illegal levy collection.
He revealed that a series of coordinated raids led to the arrest of individuals extorting motorists and traders under false pretences, in clear violation of the state’s revenue laws.
“The government is committed to restoring order and eliminating illegal practices that threaten public peace and economic stability,” Ezeilo stated. “These operations send a clear message that unlawful revenue collection and criminality will no longer be tolerated in Anambra.”
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, adding that more enforcement operations are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Some of the arrested individuals were caught extorting tricycle operators and motorists at popular junctions such as UNIZIK Junction and Regina Junction in Awka. One suspect was found in possession of Indian hemp, underscoring the state’s concern about related drug offences.
The apprehended suspects were transferred to AIRS for interrogation and subsequently arraigned in court, where they were convicted and sentenced to six months in prison.
Residents and business owners in affected areas have lauded the clampdown, describing the move as a long-awaited relief from criminal extortion that has hampered lawful commerce and daily activities.
Ezeilo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sanitising the revenue collection system and restoring public confidence in its operations.
