Legacy in Print: “The Chronicles of a Legend” Celebrates Esama of Benin, Gabriel Igbinedion

It was an afternoon steeped in culture, legacy, and tribute as the House of Igbinedion unveiled “The Chronicles of a Legend,” a new biography chronicling the extraordinary life of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of the Benin Kingdom.

Held at the prestigious Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the book launch drew Nigeria’s elite—political leaders, traditional rulers, scholars, and cultural icons—united in celebrating a man whose life story bridges generations and industries.

Before the formal ceremony began, the atmosphere outside the venue was brought to life by vibrant cultural performances.

Women dressed in red velvet wrappers, coral beads, and traditional regalia sang, danced, and welcomed guests in a display of Benin heritage. Some attendees joined the dance, while others offered cash gifts as part of the celebration.

The book, published by Crossword Publishing, traces Igbinedion’s remarkable journey—from modest beginnings to becoming a revered figure in entrepreneurship, aviation, education, culture, and philanthropy.

It captures not just his achievements, but the values and vision that have defined his life.

Among the dignitaries present was President Bola Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who praised Igbinedion as “a titan in business, a cultural icon, a patriot, and a living legend.” He described the biography as “a compendium of resilience, innovation, and service,” particularly applauding the founding of Okada Air and Igbinedion University as pioneering milestones.

Also in attendance was 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who pledged a 10-year personal endowment to Igbinedion University as a tribute to Esama’s lifelong dedication to education.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Delta State Governor James Ibori added their voices in praise. Ibori announced a ₦100 million donation to the university—₦50 million to endow a chair in the economics department, and another ₦50 million for general institutional development.

In an emotional address, Chief Igbinedion reflected on his journey:
“I was not born into greatness, but I built it with every step, every coin, every prayer. Legacy is not in riches, but in the values you pass on. If all you leave is wealth, you have failed.”

The book’s review, delivered by Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, captured the depth of its narrative.

“This book is not just history; it is literature. It paints hurricanes. It tracks rivers through rock. With over 33 companies and 17,000 employees, Esama’s legacy is both measurable and monumental.”

Other prominent guests included media mogul Dele Momodu, the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and several distinguished figures from across the country.

“The Chronicles of a Legend” stands not only as a biography, but as a lasting tribute to a man who has shaped industries, touched lives, and redefined what it means to build a lasting legacy.
