UNILAG Unveils New Faculties in Architecture, Media, Robotics, Others in Landmark Restructuring

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced the unbundling of six existing faculties and the creation of eight new ones.

The development, which was made public through an official statement on the university’s website on Friday, marks one of the most ambitious academic expansions in the institution’s history.

According to the statement, the new faculties are: Architecture, Basic Clinical Sciences, Communication and Media Studies, Computing and Informatics, Creative Arts, Health Professions, Life Sciences, and Physical and Earth Sciences. These faculties were carved out from the existing faculties of Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Sciences, and Management Sciences.

With this restructuring, UNILAG now boasts a total of nineteen faculties, up from twelve. The expansion also includes the launch of several new departments and programmes tailored to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving academic and professional landscape.

Among these are Interior Architecture and Design, Landscape Architecture, Public Relations and Advertising, Journalism, Broadcasting and Media Studies, Music and Sound Production, Intelligent Systems and Robotics, Cybersecurity, and Software Engineering.

The university described the changes as a deliberate and forward-thinking response to the needs of a dynamic world, emphasizing the importance of preparing students for the future of work and innovation.

The statement highlighted that the restructuring was driven by the desire to expand knowledge, foster innovation, and build a new generation of professionals equipped with both technical skills and creative capacity.

“In our continuous drive to expand knowledge, foster innovation, and prepare students for the evolving future, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has unbundled some previously loved faculties to establish new faculties and programmes aimed at meeting the needs of a dynamic world,” the statement read.

UNILAG further noted that the new structure was designed to deepen expertise and spark renewed academic enthusiasm among both students and faculty.

“These additions reflect our renewed commitment to broadening horizons, deepening expertise, and shaping leaders who will reimagine the future,” the university added. “Indeed, and in truth, with this bold step into the future, UNILAG will be shaping thinkers, creators, leaders and change-makers who will take on the world with knowledge and compassion.”

The statement concluded with a call for collaboration from stakeholders, alumni, and the public, inviting them to join the institution on what it described as “a rewarding journey where innovation meets tradition, and possibilities are limitless.”

Founded in 1962, the University of Lagos is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading universities and a hub for academic excellence, research, and innovation. This restructuring is expected to further enhance its reputation as a forward-looking institution prepared to meet both national and global educational challenges.
