SERAP Decries Lack of Accountability Among Nigerian Governors, Urges Presidential Oversight

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has raised alarm over what it describes as the widespread lack of accountability among Nigerian governors and other public office holders at both federal and state levels.

Speaking during a Saturday appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, noted that many Nigerians view state governors as wasteful in their management of public resources.

“The reality on the ground today is that most Nigerians perceive the governors as being profligate. It speaks to the level of poverty in Nigeria,” Oluwadare stated.

He stressed that President Bola Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief, holds significant constitutional powers that could influence governance at the state level and help foster greater accountability.

“With the nature of federalism we practise — or perhaps the type of democracy we claim to practise — the President has a lot of powers to influence the economy and provide oversight,” he said.

Oluwadare further criticised governors for failing to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities, particularly in delivering infrastructure and development projects that directly impact citizens.

“Governors often prioritise the construction of extravagant government buildings over much-needed infrastructure that serves the people. This reflects a failure in leadership and misplacement of priorities,” he added.

He emphasized that impunity remains a major obstacle to good governance, stating that despite clear constitutional roles, many public officials operate without consequences for misuse of power or public funds.

SERAP reiterated that public trust should be tied to the institution of public office rather than individual officeholders, thereby ensuring accountability and continuity in governance.
