Tinubu, Obi, Saraki Urge Nigerian Leaders to Build Lasting Legacies

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi, and former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, have jointly called on leaders across the country to focus on building enduring legacies that will positively impact future generations.
The call was made during a book presentation held in Abuja to honour Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, founder of Okada Air, and proprietor of Nigeria’s first private university.
Representing President Tinubu at the event, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume described Chief Igbinedion as “a trailblazer whose contributions to national development, education, and private enterprise should be a model for both current and aspiring leaders.”
Peter Obi, who also spoke at the event, emphasized the importance of legacy over titles or temporary political power. “True leadership is not about how long one serves or the positions held, but the impact made. We must begin to honour those who have made real contributions to society,” he said, adding that many deserving Nigerians are often left out of national recognition.
Similarly, Dr. Bukola Saraki encouraged today’s leaders to be intentional about the future they leave behind. “Chief Igbinedion has built a legacy through his investments in education, aviation, and philanthropy. That is what should drive every leader to be remembered for good,” Saraki stated.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Delta State Governor James Ibori, traditional rulers, politicians, academics, and captains of industry.
The book, which chronicles the life and contributions of Chief Igbinedion, also sparked calls for more robust national honours systems that genuinely reflect the achievements of outstanding citizens.
Observers say the convergence of leaders from different political affiliations Tinubu, Obi, and Saraki around a shared message of legacy-building sends a powerful reminder about the long-term responsibilities of leadership, especially as Nigeria continues to navigate socio-political and economic challenges.
