My Relationship with Atiku Won’t Stop Me from Criticising Him, Says Dino Melaye

Former senator and 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, has stated that his close personal ties with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not deter him from speaking truth to power or voicing his criticisms when necessary.

Melaye made this known in response to questions about his loyalty and political alignment with Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections.

He emphasized that constructive criticism is a fundamental element of democratic engagement and should not be sacrificed for the sake of friendship or political alliances.

“I have a personal relationship with Atiku, but that doesn’t mean I will not criticise him if I think he is wrong,” Melaye said.

The former lawmaker is known for his vocal stance on national issues and unfiltered political commentary, often using his platform to spotlight what he sees as inconsistencies or failures in governance even among allies.

This statement comes at a time when internal dynamics within the PDP remain tense, following electoral losses and increasing scrutiny from both members and the public. Melaye’s comments may signal a broader shift within the opposition camp, with some party figures advocating for internal reforms and accountability regardless of party hierarchy.

As one of the more prominent figures in Nigeria’s opposition bloc, Melaye’s remarks are likely to generate further conversations about loyalty, integrity, and the role of criticism in political circles.
