I Won’t Run for California Governor in 2026, Says Kamala Harris

Former U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris has formally announced that she will not contest the 2026 California gubernatorial election, ending speculation about her potential return to state-level politics.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Harris said the decision came after “deep reflection,” emphasizing that her focus would remain on national engagement and political advocacy.
“I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor,” Harris stated. “But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”
Her decision comes at a pivotal moment in California politics, with the gubernatorial seat expected to be vacated in 2026 following Governor Gavin Newsom’s term expiration.
Harris, a former U.S. Senator and California Attorney General, was widely seen as a frontrunner if she had entered the race.
Political analysts had speculated for months about her possible candidacy, especially following her 2024 campaign as Vice President alongside President Joe Biden, which ended in electoral defeat. However, Harris has chosen not to re-enter the electoral fray for now, opting instead to support Democratic causes and candidates across the country.
Her announcement clears the path for other prominent Democrats eyeing the governorship.
Among those expected to vie for the seat are California Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, ex-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra.
While stepping away from the 2026 gubernatorial contest, Harris has left the door open for a potential run in the 2028 presidential election. Allies say she is considering various ways to remain politically active, including launching a political action committee and engaging in public speaking, grassroots organizing, and authorship. A memoir from Harris is expected later this year.
Her decision not to run has been met with a mix of disappointment and respect among supporters, many of whom saw her as a unifying figure capable of navigating California’s complex political landscape.
Meanwhile, other Democratic hopefuls are expected to intensify their campaign preparations now that a major contender has stepped aside.
Harris’s statement reinforces her continued relevance in national politics. Though out of elected office, she remains a key voice within the Democratic Party, and her next moves will be closely watched as the party begins to define its post-Biden era.
