Direct All Inquiries,.Concerns on NIN-SIM Linkage to Your Network Provider, NIMC Tells Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has instructed the populace to direct all concerns pertaining to NIN-SIM linkage and verification to their respective mobile network providers.

This announcement comes as NIMC heralds the successful transition of all telecommunications operators in Nigeria to its newly developed identity verification platform, NINAuth.

In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC declared that the comprehensive adoption of NINAuth by telecommunications companies signifies a significant enhancement in the verification process of National Identification Numbers (NINs) within the nation.

“The Commission reassures the public that the Verification and Authentication Service platforms are operational and readily accessible to all. However, any issues encountered by NIN holders regarding new SIM registrations, SIM swaps, SIM migrations, or SIM reinstatements should be addressed to the telecom operators for prompt resolution,” NIMC asserted.

The NINAuth platform, as outlined by NIMC, augments both the security and efficiency of identity verification, granting NIN holders increased control over their personal information.

“The NINAuth platform bolsters data protection, empowers individuals with control over their personal data, facilitates seamless verification, and offers convenient sign-on access to services,” the Commission elaborated.

NIMC emphasized that the inauguration of the NINAuth platform is part of its broader initiative to fortify Nigeria’s digital identity framework. It embodies a shift towards granting Nigerians greater autonomy, while enhancing the speed and security of identity verification across governmental and private sectors.

The Commission reiterated that its Verification and Authentication Service platforms remain fully operational and accessible, ensuring that both individuals and organizations can continue to utilize the system for legitimate identity checks.

Background information reveals that earlier this month, millions of telecom subscribers across Nigeria faced difficulties accessing SIM-related services, such as SIM swaps, replacements, and new activations, due to a technical disruption associated with a platform migration mandated by NIMC. Telecom operators reported that the migration, aimed at improving the security and efficiency of national identity verification, introduced unforeseen technical challenges, impeding the ability of mobile networks to execute real-time verification processes essential for SIM registration, number portability, and other vital services.

However, MTN and Airtel confirmed last week that they had resumed all SIM-related activities upon completion of the migration. The NIN-SIM linkage initiative, introduced by the Federal Government several years ago and made mandatory in 2020, is integral to Nigeria’s national strategy to bolster digital security and thwart fraud. With the new infrastructure now operational, NIMC assures that telecom companies possess all necessary resources to manage related services seamlessly and efficiently.
