Dino Melaye Dumps PDP, Cites Party’s Failure to Offer Credible Leadership

Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to offer effective leadership and address Nigeria’s growing governance challenges.

Melaye’s resignation was contained in a letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The former senator shared the letter publicly via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” the letter began, noting that the decision was borne out of the party’s “lack of potency and capacity” to deliver Nigerians from the current political and socioeconomic crises.

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kogi State during the 2023 election, said his departure followed deep reflection on the state of the party and its trajectory.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or lend my support to its agenda,” he wrote.

He requested that his resignation be taken as an immediate and total withdrawal from all party structures and engagements.

“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the statement concluded.

Melaye expressed appreciation for the opportunity he had to serve under the PDP during his political journey.
