Police Arrest Woman Linked to Dismemberment of Pregnant Nurse, Launch Manhunt for Ritual Suspects

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the horrific murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
The arrest was made on July 25, 2025, following critical assistance from residents of Umueri village in Ogbunike, who helped identify the suspect after the victim’s mutilated remains were discovered dumped in a soakaway pit. The gruesome nature of the killing has since sparked widespread fear and condemnation across the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, shared via the command’s official Facebook page on Wednesday, Nwafor admitted during interrogation that she was romantically involved with the prime suspect, Chiemerie Elobisi, who is currently at large.
She further confessed to being summoned after the murder to clean up the crime scene. Disturbingly, she revealed that the victim’s body parts were later sold to local native doctors believed to be involved in ritualistic activities.
Investigations indicate that the victim, a trained nurse, had been lured to Elobisi’s residence under the pretense of offering medical help.
Building on the suspect’s confession, police operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine in the early hours of July 29. The shrine, operated by one Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile of Itima Amawa Village in Ogbunike, yielded chilling evidence — suspected human remains concealed in nylon bags.
An extensive manhunt is currently underway to apprehend Elobisi and other suspected collaborators and body part traffickers.
Condemning the crime as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality,” Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public that justice will be served. He encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward, promising full protection for informants.
