Labour Party Raises the Alarm Over Harassment of Leaders Amidst ‘Malicious Petition’
The Labour Party (LP) led by Senator Nenadi Usman has raised serious concerns over the alleged harassment of its leaders by security agencies.
This follows a “malicious petition” reportedly authored by one Abayomi Arabambi, who the party claims is impersonating its official spokesperson.
The statement, which was released on Wednesday and signed by Ken Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman of LP, Senator Nenadi Usman, details how the security agencies have been targeting the party’s leaders based on the unfounded allegations in the petition.
According to the party, Arabambi’s petition made serious accusations against prominent members of the Labour Party, including Peter Obi, Comrade Joe Ajaero, Senator Victor Umeh, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, and Dr. Yunusa Tanko.
Arabambi, in the petition, claimed that these leaders were involved in an alleged plot to violently overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
He further alleged that this plot was being masked under the guise of organizing a “One Million Man March.”
The Labour Party vehemently denied these allegations, branding them as baseless and malicious. The party also expressed concerns over the growing intimidation and harassment of its leaders, which it believes is politically motivated and aimed at silencing opposition voices.
“The false and dangerous claims made in the petition are a deliberate attempt to undermine the democratic process and destabilize the country by falsely associating the Labour Party with acts of violence,” the statement read.
“We are calling on the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the source of this malicious petition and stop the harassment of our leaders.”
The party further emphasized that it remains committed to peaceful democratic processes and has no intention of engaging in any violent activity against the government. It also condemned the actions of individuals who, according to the LP, are attempting to create divisions within the party for personal gain.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in the country, with various opposition parties, including the Labour Party, voicing concerns over alleged irregularities in the recent presidential election.
However, the LP has consistently advocated for peaceful demonstrations and constructive dialogue to address any grievances.
The Labour Party has demanded that the authorities respect the rights of its members and refrain from using security agencies to target political opposition.
The party also warned that it will not be intimidated and will continue to push for transparency and justice in the political system.
In the meantime, the security agencies have yet to respond to the Labour Party’s claims, and no official statements have been made regarding the identity or whereabouts of Abayomi Arabambi.
The LP’s leaders, including Peter Obi and Joe Ajaero, are expected to address the media in the coming days to provide further clarification on the matter.
As the situation unfolds, many are closely watching to see how the Nigerian government will respond to these allegations of political harassment and whether any actions will be taken to address the claims of false accusations against opposition leaders.
The Labour Party has urged the Nigerian public to remain vigilant and not be swayed by misinformation and attempts to discredit its leaders.
