Police Chief Speaks Out on Plight of Retired Officers

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has highlighted the dire situation faced by retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme, describing their living conditions as “humiliating” and “morally unacceptable.”

He emphasized that the meager pensions received by these officers are insufficient to meet their basic needs, leaving many struggling to afford healthcare, housing, and a dignified life.

The police chief noted that the poor state of retirees is affecting the morale of serving officers, who fear a similar fate upon retirement.

He stated that this anxiety is having a demoralizing effect on officers across ranks, eroding their confidence and making them question the value of their service.

Egbetokun expressed his commitment to improving the welfare of retired officers and has initiated efforts to augment their pensions.

The police leadership has presented its position to the National Assembly, seeking to exempt the police from the Contributory Pensions Scheme. While advocating for a strategic approach to this issue, Egbetokun cautioned against hasty decisions that might lead to uncertainty.

To boost morale among serving officers, Egbetokun announced a new welfare incentive. Officers who win the Inspector-General’s award for exceptional professionalism twice consecutively will be considered for accelerated promotion.

This initiative aims to promote a culture of excellence, creativity, and patriotism within the Force.

The Inspector-General’s comments underscore the need for urgent attention to the welfare of police officers, both serving and retired.

As the police leadership explores options for reform, it is essential to prioritize the well-being of those who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation.
