Obi Spends ₦576m on Schools, Hospitals Across Nigeria in 6 Months
Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated a total of ₦576 million to educational and social intervention projects across Nigeria between January and July 2025.
The donations, which span all six geopolitical zones, were directed towards schools of nursing, hospitals, orphanages, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and religious institutions reinforcing Obi’s long-standing emphasis on investing in human capital development.
According to data compiled by civic platform Statisense, the South East Obi’s home region received the bulk of the interventions, with ₦415 million disbursed across Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo States.
Among the major beneficiaries in the region were IHM Health System in Anambra, which received ₦100 million on January 24, Paul University, Awka, which got ₦30 million on January 19, and Christ the King College, Onitsha, which received ₦50 million on July 24.
Obi also funded the construction of a community health centre in Nkanu East, Enugu, with a ₦20 million donation on May 7.
In Northern Nigeria, Obi extended support to both Christian and Muslim institutions, a gesture observers say reflects deliberate efforts to promote national unity through inclusive philanthropy.
In Kaduna State alone, Obi donated ₦20 million each to Joseph D. Bagobiri Memorial College and Kawo Al-Majiri School on February 19. On July 9, he contributed ₦5 million to Madarasatul Hidayyatul Auladi Muslimima Almajiri School and ₦10 million to St. Gerald’s College of Nursing Sciences. In Borno State, Chibok Secondary School received ICT equipment 10 laptops and three printers valued at ₦6 million on June 11.
The North Central zone also benefitted from Obi’s outreach. On April 14, he gave ₦10 million to OLA College of Nursing Science in Jos, Plateau State, and ₦20 million to Kubwa Anglican Comprehensive Secondary School & Hospital in Abuja on May 19. The same day, he donated ₦7.5 million to an IDP camp in Plateau and ₦2.5 million to Paradise College of Health & Technology in Nasarawa.
In the South South region, Obi donated ₦15 million to Philomena College of Nursing in Edo State on July 8 and ₦20 million to the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry on July 25, bringing total donations to the region to ₦35 million.
Analysts view the interventions not only as philanthropic acts but also as a continuation of Obi’s development-focused political ethos. His investments in education and healthcare, they say, send a strong message on what effective governance should prioritize.
During one of his donation tours, Obi reiterated his commitment to human development: “We must begin to build from the roots by educating our children, equipping our schools, and supporting our health institutions.”
Though no longer in office, Obi has maintained a strong presence in national discourse, regularly offering policy critiques and promoting data-driven governance. His philanthropic activities continue to strengthen his profile as a leader with a hands-on approach to addressing Nigeria’s social needs.
