Activist Challenges Tinubu’s Bid to Extend Customs Chief’s Tenure

A human rights activist, Dr. Bolaji Akinyemi, has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu’s decision to extend the tenure of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, questions the legality of Adeniyi’s continued stay in office beyond his statutory tenure.

The plaintiff’s counsel argues that the President’s decision to extend Adeniyi’s tenure raises constitutional concerns. The suit seeks judicial declarations on whether the President has the authority to extend Adeniyi’s tenure and whether the Comptroller General can continue to act in his capacity beyond his exit date.

The plaintiff is seeking several reliefs, including a declaration that any extension or continued stay in office by Adeniyi is illegal and unconstitutional, an order restraining the President and Adeniyi from executing or accepting any such tenure extension, and any further orders deemed just in the interest of constitutional order and rule of law.

The lawsuit highlights concerns about the abuse of executive powers and the importance of preserving institutional integrity and accountability. The outcome of the suit could have significant implications for the governance of the Nigeria Customs Service and the rule of law in Nigeria.

The plaintiff’s counsel emphasizes that the suit is not just about one office holder but about preserving legality, transparency, and accountability in governance.

The Nigeria Customs Service is a vital institution, and any illegality at the top could compromise national security, economic stability, and citizens’ trust.
