Super Falcons Return to Hero’s Welcome After Clinching 10th WAFCON Title

Nigeria’s Super Falcons received a thunderous welcome on Monday as they returned home from Morocco after clinching their record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

The triumphant team landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at approximately 2:26 p.m. aboard a chartered flight from Rabat, where they defeated host nation Morocco in a thrilling final over the weekend.

Awaiting their arrival were hundreds of jubilant fans and a high-powered delegation of government officials and dignitaries who had gathered hours before touchdown to honour the victorious squad.

Among those present to welcome the African champions were Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, Minister of Culture and Tourism Hanatu Musawa, and Minister for Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. Also in attendance were three state governors—Uba Sani of Kaduna, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, and Hope Uzodimma of Imo—alongside several other federal ministers and sports officials.

Cheers erupted as the Falcons emerged from the aircraft, proudly displaying the WAFCON trophy. The reception included cultural displays, chants of “Super Falcons!” and waves of Nigerian flags as fans expressed their gratitude and admiration for the team’s resilience and historic achievement.

The final in Rabat saw Nigeria edge out the host nation’s Atlas Lionesses in a hard-fought encounter, cementing their dominance in African women’s football. The victory marked the Falcons’ 10th continental crown, reaffirming their status as the most successful team in WAFCON history.

Government officials commended the team not only for their exceptional performance on the pitch but also for being a source of national pride and inspiration for millions of Nigerians, especially young girls.
