Obi May Return To PDP, Seek 2027 Presidential Ticket — Ali Modu Sheriff

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is set to return to the PDP to pursue his presidential ambition in the 2027 general elections. Speaking on a Channels Television programme on Monday, Sheriff stated that available information indicates Obi has concluded plans to rejoin the PDP, a party he left ahead of the 2023 elections. “The information available to me is that at any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” he said. Sheriff dismissed the recently announced opposition coalition involving Obi and other political figures as lacking substance, saying it holds no political weight and exists only in the media. “The so-called coalition does not exist. It’s just media talk. Politics is not done in the media. It’s about structures, alliances and groundwork,” he added. Peter Obi, who ran as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the PDP platform in 2019, defected to the Labour Party in 2022 and emerged as its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections. He finished third in the election but gained significant support, particularly among young and urban voters. Despite his involvement in the Coalition for a New Nigeria, a platform backed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi has maintained public silence on any plans to leave the Labour Party or return to the PDP. Neither Obi nor the PDP has issued an official statement in response to Sheriff’s comments. The Labour Party has also not reacted to the claims. Sheriff’s remarks have sparked fresh political speculation, as analysts watch closely for any realignments that could shape the 2027 election landscape
