Nigerian Nurses Issue 7-Day Strike Notice Over Welfare, Working Conditions

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM-FHI) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government, demanding improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses across the country.

The notice, signed by the association’s National Secretary, Enya Osinachi, and released by its President, Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan, was made public in Abuja on Monday following an emergency National Executive Council meeting held on July 10, 2025.

According to the statement, the decision to issue the strike notice comes after a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14 expired without a “meaningful response” from the Federal Government or the Federal Ministry of Health.

“The strike, starting at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 29, will involve total service withdrawal across all Federal health institutions. Nurses nationwide have been asked to comply fully and stand in solidarity,” the notice declared.
NANNM-FHI emphasized the critical role of nurses in Nigeria’s healthcare system, stating that nurses contribute 60 to 70 percent of hospital services, and therefore deserve improved welfare, fair treatment, and recognition for their essential services.

The association also rejected a circular dated June 27, issued by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, which it described as detrimental to nurses’ interests. It called for the circular’s immediate reversal and demanded adjustments to key allowances including shift duty, call duty, and retention allowances.

NANNM-FHI further urged the Federal Government to seize the opportunity for proactive dialogue and constructive engagement, warning that continued inaction could seriously impact healthcare delivery across the country.

“A well-supported nursing workforce is critical to achieving quality healthcare outcomes and sustaining public health across all federal medical institutions in Nigeria,” the statement read.

As the strike deadline looms, the association has called on its members across all Federal health facilities to prepare for full compliance, while urging the government to respond swiftly to avert a nationwide shutdown of nursing services.
